Using Ion Exchange Resins to Purify Water

Using Ion Exchange Resins to Purify Water

Tue 30 Apr 2019

Water purification can be an uphill battle. There are many ways to purify water, the most popular is Deionisation which uses mixed bed resin also known as ion exchange.

Mixed bed resin is made up of positively and negatively charged polymer beads that alter the ion charge of soluble particles in the water. The resin also contains insoluble acid or alkaline chemicals and these are the elements which help to remove the ‘hard’ compounds such as Calcium & Magnesium.

Whilst Deionisation is the most popular way of water purification it defiantly has its drawbacks. Firstly finding a trustworthy, price competitive supplier for resin can be a task in itself.  It is commonly known that resin can be out of stock, it can also fluctuate in price.

Another drawback is that not all resin is the same, so it is important to test the water after every purification process. If there is a difference in TDS (total dissolvable solids) then this is quite possibly down to the batch of resin you are using. The frustration of this is that until the water is purified and tested, there is no way of knowing that it’s a bad batch of resin. resin has then been opened and there is usually nothing you can do in regards to sending it back in order to buy a new batch (some suppliers might have a guarantee). This is money and time that cannot be replaced. Once a bag of resin is open, it will only last a couple more weeks until it goes off and will not be any good to use. This is a particular issue for small sole trader companies that would only need half a bag at a time, for example.
